Before and during the Vietnam War, numerous US policymakers asserted that the West must stop communist expansion in Vietnam in order to protect Indonesia, the much more important nation to the south. Yet few American leaders – and few historians in more recent decades – explored the relationship between the Vietnam War and the status of Indonesia in any depth. This essay examines this link by first exploring how US escalation in Vietnam affected the political situation in Indonesia and then probing the reverse: how conditions in Indonesia contributed to American decision-making regarding Vietnam. The chapter argues that the link was far murkier than bold American rhetoric suggested.
