From the United Kingdom’s perspective, the crisis surrounding the Falkland Islands intertwines itself with the wider process of the breakup of its empire following World War II. In many cases, the disengagement of Great Britain from its colonies was arranged by transfers of power to the local elite at the end of a negotiation process. In other words, the point was to satisfy the request for independence from representative sectors of the native population in the least expensive way for the United Kingdom, from both a military and economic point of view.
