Abstract In March 1802 the Peace of Amiens ended a decade of exhausting conflict. While many in government, and in political and diplomatic circles, distrusted France’s first consul, Napoleon Bonaparte, and expected the resumption of war, the rapid demobilization of the fleet meant that many naval surgeons were left without employment, and faced an uncertain future.
