The Baku–Tbilisi–Kars Railway connects Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, starting from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, through Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, to Kars, a city in northeastern Turkey. Its total length is about 850 kilometers. The 1,435 mm standard rail is used in Turkey, and the 1,520 mm wide rail of the Soviet Union is used in Georgia and Azerbaijan. Some sections of the rail adopt double track, with a design speed of 120 km/h. The project commenced in 2007 and was opened to traffic in 2017. The design annual transport capacity is 1 million person-times and 6.5 million tons of cargo at the beginning, and 3 million person-times and 17 million tons of cargo in the long run.
