Abstract Newton’s Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica (The mathematical principles of natural philosophy) was published in 1687, and it is hardly an exaggeration to say that it revolutionized the role of mathematics in our understanding of the physical world. Its main aim was a mathematical explanation of the motion of the planets, but it also touches on fluid flow, wave motion, the ebb and flow of tides, and paths of comets. Not all Newton’s ideas stood the test of time, but his theory of gravity and planetary motion laid the foundations for what became the accepted view of the universe until the twentieth century.
