Originally Yuhuan was a concubine of Prince Shou, one of the sons of Emperor Xuanzong. The Emperor’s favorite at the time was Wu Guifei, but when she died, the Emperor became very depressed. There were many other beautiful women in his palace, but the Emperor was attracted to none of them. But then the Emperor asked that a search be made, both inside and out side of the palace, to seek a new concubine to take her place. Later on Yuhuan was recommended to him and he fell in love with her at first sight, taking her from his son. At the time, he was already sixty and Yuhuan was in her twenties. To deceive the public, Emperor Xuanzong arranged for Yuhuan to become a Daoist priestess and granted her a Daoist name Taizhen, as she was then living in the Daoist temple, Taizhen. Shortly af terwards this so-called “ Daoist priestess” was brought to Xuanzong’s imperial palace by stealth. In 745 a .d ., Yuhuan was granted the title Guifei.
