Robert Walpole, born 26 August 1671, third but first surviving son of Robert Walpole, MP, of Houghton, Norfolk, and Mary, daughter of Sir fejfrey Burwell. Educated at Eton and King’s College, Cambridge. Married (2) 1700 Catherine, daughter of John Shorter, Baltic merchant, three sons (Robert, later Lord Walpole, Edward and Horace) and two daughters. (2) 1737 Maria, daughter of Thomas Skerrett, two illegitimate daughters. Whig MP for Castle Rising 1701-2, King’s Lynn 1702-fan. 1712 (expelledfrom the House for alleged corruption), Feb.-Mar. 1712 (election void) and 1713-42. Member of Prince George’s Admiralty Council 1705-8; Secretary-at-War 1708-20 (Acting Secretary fan-Sept, 1710); Treasurer of the Navy 1710-11 (dismissed); Paymaster of the Forces 1714-15; Chancellor of the Exchequer and First Lord of the Treasury 1715-17 (resigned); Paymaster of the Forces 1720-1; Chancellor of the Exchequer and First Lord of the Treasury 1721-42 (resigned). KB 1725; KG 1726; created Earl of Orford 1742. Died 1745.
