Anchored to a Russian Constructivist vision of modernity in which science meets a form of violent intensity, Tatlin’s Tower could be said to combine a heavy dose of functionalism with telluric mythology. If the Babel-like exoskeleton of Tatlin’s Tower reveals the intensity of the theological, its internal vault system shows the rationality of science and what Svetlana Boym once called “enchanted technology.” It was a technology that was many miles from the telluricism of Mao.
