Abstract From the first days of 1944 everyone, Germans and their enemies alike, knew that the Anglo-American invasion of north-western Europe was coming soon and that its success or failure would decide the outcome of the Second World War. Failure, followed by transfer of German strength to the east would change German prospects on both fronts and make stalemate and compromise much more likely.
