There are two sequels to the story of Xi Shi. One version holds that she threw herself into a swift river and was drowned; another legend portrays Xi Shi and Fan Li as reunited lovers after her mission was successfully accomplished. Fan Li became a merchant near Lake Tai, where they shared their lives. Today, there are two caves named for Xi Shi and Fan Li in Yixing, Jiangsu province, where, the legend related, they lived together in seclusion. Many stories and plays recall the story of Xi Shi, and she often appeared in the Chinese classics. One of the bestknown reminiscences is by Liang Chenyu, The Girl Who Washes Silk, which recalls the tragic love affair between Xi Shi and Fan Li, who sacrificed their own happiness to avenge their kingdom.
