The Sydney Opera House is undoubtedly one of the most important pieces of architecture of the 20th century. Planning for a new performing arts building in Sydney began in the late 1940s; the existing Sydney Town Hall was not considered large enough or suitable for many types of live performance. Woollarawarre Bennelong was a senior man of the Eora people and served as a bridge with the British settlers. In 1792 he became one of the first Aborigines to travel to England. He returned to Australia in 1795 and acted as an advisor to the governor and held a high position in Eora. The government announced an international architectural competition and the guidelines were released in February 1956. The jury included Sir Leslie Martin, who had been part of the design team for the Royal Festival Hall in London, and the eminent Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen. The Sydney Opera House developed from an architectural competition.
