This chapter will examine Germany’s role as a foundational actor in Lutheranism even while experiencing considerable contention over Lutheran identity. The Lutheran churches have also encountered a growing pattern of secularization and have sought various strategies to adapt to this situation, including ecumenism and social activism. Yet, the Lutheran churches of Germany still have considerable influence in world Lutheranism and retain a strong social and charitable role in the birthplace of the Reformation, even if Luther’s message does not ring out clearly from many pulpits.
