The Introduction justifies the need for the research which has underpinned this book by outlining the rapid social changes which have occurred in Ireland and their effects on and relationship to, religious change. It outlines the simultaneous decline of Roman Catholicism in Ireland alongside growth in other religions and in atheism, and illustrates the need for greater understanding of how smaller religions such as the CoJCoLDS are experienced in an Irish context. It offers an analysis of the commonalities between the CoJCoLDS and Irish Catholicism, and shows the reader how we can better understand contemporary changes within Mormonism and Irish society though an exploration of collective memory and tradition in a context of rapid social change. In the Introduction a summary of each chapter is also described.
