This chapter discusses the emergence of Salafi ideals and their historical evolution. It analyzes the various trends within the movement, the place of each trend in contemporary Muslim societies, and the distinguishing features of each trend. Focusing on Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Egypt as centers of Salafism, the chapter analyzes the role played by Salafi <italic>ʿulama</italic> in these countries and relations with their respective states. The chapter draws from exiting literature on Salafism and the various Salafi movements in the selected countries. It also considers the existing typology of Salafi political thought while outlining how the book proposes to reformulate the typology.
