Abstract The idea of adopting the seventh-day Sabbath as the day of rest and worship and of abandoning Sunday captured the imagination of a small group of former Millerites. They integrated their new belief in the seventh-day Sabbath into a theological system that both explained their disappointment on October 22, 1844, and gave them a new mission to the world. Their understanding of the Sabbath was distinct from that of Judaism or Seventh Day Baptists. They saw it within the context of their commitment to fundamental Protestant, Millerite, and American principles. They developed a synthesis that combined the seventh-day Sabbath with their new understanding of the prophetic symbols of Daniel, their new understanding of Christ’s ministry in the heavenly sanctuary, and a new perception of their mission defined by the three angels in Revelation 14.
