This chapter introduces the city of Aleppo in relation to its shifting location in the nation-state and regional and transregional economies under Baathist rule. The chapter acknowledges Aleppo as the most heavily contested and brutalized city in Syria's civil war. Despite its relative economic stagnation under Baathist rule, Aleppo retained a strong sense of its identity, character, and excellence due to its heritage and pride in authentic cultural forms. The chapter then discusses the merchants of Sunni Muslim affiliation, referencing their social order premised on the ideals of respectability and reputation. It considers economic liberalization as a cultural process wherein merchants represent public figures.
