Written from a Protestant (Reformed) perspective, this chapter is a reflection on the future of Nicaea for churches in various contexts. What do we mean, however, by “Nicaea”? What this word means for us today is very different from early accounts of this council. For us, it often means a creed containing a series of dogmatic promulgations, including a significant one concerning the Son’s consubstantiality with God the Father. Several centuries of theological liberalism, especially within Protestantism, have led to a thorough questioning of the creed and its normative status. Such questioning is part and parcel of theological reasoning, and it may help us maintain a median degree of normativity, between absolutization and utter neglect, as well as foster a reflection on what may be missing in the creed, which may be seen as a rather incomplete and thus not wholly adequate summary of the Christian faith.
