This chapter juxtaposes the concept of truth, a concept at the heart of the council of Nicaea, with ethics and virtue. Nicaea will be used as a case study of sorts to make the broader assertion that when theological truth is delinked from ethics in a given society, the virtues pursued by that society lose their grounding theoretically and their contours pragmatically. These neo-aretaic gestures regress to the base societal values that underpin them, but without recourse to the philosophical and theological principles that justify axiomatic ethical assertions. This chapter then suggests that truth and conciliarity are two of the boundaries by which virtues can find their form. Lastly, this chapter turns to some reflections on Nicaea and ascetical spirituality, namely from a Coptic Orthodox Christian lens.
