Since the end of the Franco era, Granada has been conflicted by its own visions of its past. Essentially conservative and at times slow to address the wrongs of the Civil War and subsequent dictatorship, at the same time it has actively promoted its Nasrid past, based on an ideal, to great success in terms of attracting ever more visitors the city. The restoration and expansion of the Albaicin, now, alongside the Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the opening, in 2003, of the first officially sanctioned mosque in the city since 1492, and the transition of holidaymakers from hotel-based tourism to the self-catering Airbnb model are among the various controversial developments of recent decades. Tourism has brought jobs; recessions and a pandemic have destroyed these. Yet, much as it has always done, Granada continues to flourish, imperfect yet still undeniably beguiling.
