This chapter introduces the reader to the key thesis of the book, namely the relationship that Peckinpah’s films have to the concept of the Gothic and the growing body of scholarship in that area over the last thirty years. Relevant aspects of this tradition, both American and European, are cited in reference to key examples from the director's films and the chapter will conclude by demonstrating both how the Gothic is a fluid term as well as noting how elements from different areas such as film noir, neo-noir and genres such as horror are found within the Western itself, despite the counter-arguments by traditionalists. Also, the Gothic’s relationship to changing historical circumstances also forms an important area in this director’s work.
