Magical realism in modern Swahili literature has a rather long history, starting from the “modern tales” by Shaaban Robert, written in the 1950s. The chapter asserts that throughout this history, magical realism has been used by East African writers of Swahili expression in a variety of forms – from its earlier “folklore-based” versions, stipulated by dual mentality of the authors, featuring the elements of the traditional mythological and the modern Westernized mindsets, to the conscious, deliberate, and highly artistic use of magical realism in the “new” Swahili novel; also, some authors acclaimed as mostly realistic use the elements of magical realism in their works for different purposes.
