Abstract This article examines gold and goldwork during the Bronze Age. It first reviews the history of research on Bronze Age goldwork, and notes that some exceptional gold finds have changed people’s views of the Bronze Age. The article then studies some of the contexts in which gold was found, including burial contexts where gold was found in burial mounds, most especially in male graves. It identifies the main categories of Bronze Age gold, such as jewellery and ornaments; discusses the various functions of gold; and outlines the development of gold working. Finally, the article explains the socio-cultural context of gold, its acquisition, and the different technologies used in goldwork.
