India gained its independence on 15 August 1947. The first Prime Minister of the independent nation, Jawaharlal Nehru was an intellectual and a consummate politician. If anyone had the vision and capability to reform the moribund examination-oriented university system in India, it was Nehru. A graduate of Cambridge University, Nehru was a man brimming with ideas as he took charge of the newly independent country. Yet, although the higher education system, on the whole, experienced important changes after the independence, the mainstream university system continued, in the main, unreformed. This chapter concerns itself with the main developments within the higher education system during the post-independence period. The attempt here is to provide an explanation of the important changes and also the lack of them within the mainstream universities.
