Two developments have shaped Christian presence in the French Antilles: its seventeenth century colonisation and the changes of the Second Vatican Council. The Charismatic Renewal developed with success in Guadeloupe, as Catholicism became embedded with African practices and beliefs. Meanwhile, Evangelicals, Pentecostals, Seventh-day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints experienced a boom in the 1970s. Today, there is great religious diversity among Christians in the French Antilles.
