The lineage of nonexistent philosophers continues with Lao-tzu. Whereas Confucius answers “What should be done?” the sages writing under the pen name Lao-tzu answer “What should be omitted?” They focus on the hazards of intervention, anticipating themes from laissez-faire economics and anarchist critiques of the state. What is natural, in the sense of being uninterrupted, becomes valorized as normal. Negative thinking develops in methodological principles such as null hypothesis testing. Taoism develops a religious branch that elevates absences into objects of reverence. Shadows have one foot in the realm of being and another foot in nonbeing. These amphibians are frequent ambassadors.
