Ban Jieyu wrote metaphorically of her own love for the emperor being cast off, as he became infatuated with younger women later in life, such as the Zhao sisters. Ban Jieyu was like “ The Autumn Fan,” once treasured and loved, her virgin purity taken away, only later to be cast away and replaced by other favorites at court. She was one of the few well-educated concubines able to leave a literary legacy.
