Two types of vessels made from silver plate – hemispherical dishes and bowls, and plates and platters featuring decoration – were produced in both the late Roman/Byzantine empires and the Sasanian Empire, but follow rather different trajectories with regard to the quantities of silver used to make them. In the case of Sasanian silver plate, the quantities of silver used remains modest throughout the period under consideration, whilst in the late Roman/Byzantine empires it fluctuates considerably, with greater quantities of silver committed to individual vessels, particularly in the fourth century. Why these differences emerged is discussed in relation to different cultural attitudes, the procurement of raw materials and the minting of coinage. The paper also examines evidence for diplomatic exchanges between the imperial courts and the movement of these objects well beyond the frontiers of both empires, as evidenced by discoveries in Russia and China. Zusammenfassung Zwei Gefässtypen aus Silber – halbkugelige Schalen und Schüsseln sowie verzierte Teller und Platten – wurden sowohl im spätrömisch-byzantinischen als auch im sasanidischen Reich hergestellt; sie weisen aber hinsichtlich der für ihre Herstellung verwendeten Silbermengen eine recht unterschiedliche Entwicklung auf.
