In 1793, Spain abandoned its friendship with France based on the Family Pacts policy followed during most of the eighteenth century to join the first anti-revolutionary coalition and ally with the staunch enemy, Great Britain. Was the break with France complete? Did they maintain secret contacts? Why did the Spanish government declare war on the English in 1796?
