The article analyzes the educational controversy of the late 19th — early 20th centuries about the importance of the spiritual and moral education of youth in accordance with Orthodox traditions. Based on archival materials on the history of the development of Orthodox parishes in the Kola North, certain aspects of religiosity are considered, which became the basis for education in parochial schools. It is shown that the course of primary theological schools included not only a mandatory theoretical study of the Law of God, but also the practice of introducing children to parish life through prayers, visiting church, and active participation in divine services. The article provides data from archival sources about the active participation of priests of northern parishes in the development of schooling.
