Historical interpretations of Great Moravia had a visible nationalistic aspect in the Communist period with significant overlaps regarding the actual political and ideological developments in Czechoslovakia. In short, Communist ideologists and historians tended to project their ideas about Czecho-Slovakrelations and the organization of the Czechoslovak state onto descriptions of the Great Moravian era. In this context, it should be stressed that while Great Moravia was a political matter and symbol that gradually faded from the interest of Czech historiography, its importance for Slovak historiography actually grew in the 1970s and 1980s.
