This chapter aims to provide a critical reflection on the study of public policy analysis in Thailand by showing the academic endeavours of Thai policy scholars starting from the 1980s to advance non-traditional policy studies which can be seen as alternative approaches to the study of public policy analysis. The alternative approaches encourage policy studies outside the shadows of public administration by being more interdisciplinary. They also engage post-positivist perspectives in analysing public policy. This chapter introduces two major developments contributing to this non-conventional perspective. The first one is the governance turn, focusing on politics, governance and interaction in the policy process. The second one, on the other hand, is the critical and interpretive turn, focusing on various forms of policy knowledge, deliberation and non-technocratic-instrumental policy analysis. Although the alternative approaches are gaining more attention from the policy community, they are still uncommon among mainstream academics and literature in Thailand.
