Abstract The greatest challenge to Henry VIII’s rule was the risings of 1536—indeed they were the largest peacetime revolt in English history. His response is very revealing of his attitude to king- ship. Egoism dominated. This may be understandable in the case of the Great Matter, but for Henry, the right to rule was innate and un circumscribed.
