This chapter discusses an immediate response to a mass casualty incident, in this case a multiple vehicular accident. When first reporting the incident, journalism’s 5Ws and 1H (who, what, where, weather, why, and hazards) can be adapted to provide vital information to the 911 operator in a succinct fashion. A first aid kit can be put together from common items lying around. Triage processes for the wounded are covered in detail, including the START triage algorithm for adults and the Jump-START triage algorithm for children. The SALT triage algorithm is also discussed. The chapter outlines the activities that emergency personnel are responsible for upon their arrival at the disaster scene as well as the roles and responsibilities of its leaders in the Incident Command System.
