Abstract Introduction to, analysis of and text of an oral narrative of Sunjata written in French in 1937 by Mamby Sidibé of Kita based on griot narratives from his local town (griot Bolin Jigi Diabate is often claimed as a major source), published in 1959. Mamby Sidibé became one of the Republic of Mali's leading intellectuals. He was trained as a schoolteacher at Ecole William Ponty, practised ethnography, researched and wrote local history, campaigned for independence, and served as a politician and later a cultural advisor to the Malian government. His account of the Sunjata epic is one of the first and most balanced and sophisticated treatments of Sunjata as a performance tradition and historical source.
