Bishop Hartvic undertook to write this Life of St. Stephen of Hungary at the command of King Coloman (1095–1116), either around the year 1100 or between the years 1112 and 1116. He drew heavily on two previous Lives, the Vita Maior (composed between 1077 and 1083), and the Vita Minor (written during the reign of Coloman, but before the work of Hartvic). The Life written by Hartvic became the official text; it was used as the basis of liturgical readings, or lectiones. Innocent III approved it in 1201, except the use of the words utroque iure describing Stephen’s power; this part was subsequently omitted from manuscripts.
