Abstract This chapter charts the existing modern scholarship on Skylitzes, while emphasizing the degree to which his history (the Synopsis Historion) is an under-studied text. It offers a summary of Skylitzes' career during the reign of Emperor Alexios Komnenos, his working methods, and the source materials he used in compiling his historical writings. The most important implications of other scholars' arguments about Skylitzes' methods and sources materials are explored, most notably in relation to his coverage of the revolts of Bardas Skleros and Bardas Phokas, the career of the Parakoimomenos Basil Lekapenos, and the emperor's wars in Bulgaria.
