The doctrine relating to the Sunni or orthodox caliphate held that the caliph, the political and religious leader of the Muslim community, was the vicar of the Prophet of God. The Almohad system sought to eliminate the divergence of legal opinions, to establish the truth in matters of religion and in the field of law. The Almohad movement reflected its Berber origins through basic doctrinal texts in that language. The entire philosophical work of Averroes was composed under the patronage of the Almohad caliphs, who had encouraged him to comment on Aristotle in order to make the works more understandable; the expected audience must have been the talaba. At the personal insistence of the caliph, head of the Almohad talaba, Almohad policies made the development and promotion of knowledge a priority.
