Xiongnu North-South Split

48 CE · Ordos / Moğolistan · political

After a struggle over the chanyu's throne one group took refuge with the Han and took the name "Southern Xiongnu," establishing a semi-autonomous structure in the Ordos and Shanxi under Han protection.

The northern branch continued its resistance. This split was the effective end of the Xiongnu state, but also the critical junction at which Turco-Mongol history divided into western and eastern branches.
