Xiongnu Tengri Worship Documented

200 BCE · Moğolistan · religion

Chinese sources record that the Xiongnu venerated the sun and the moon and that the Chanyu prostrated himself before the sun each morning.

The formula of his title ran: "The Chanyu, established by Heaven and Earth, appointed by the Sun and the Moon." This cult of Tengri — the belief in the Sky God — later spread among all Turkic peoples. It is the earliest state document attesting to the Sky God faith.
