When the Xiongnu split in two, the Northern Shanyu Zhizhi refused to submit to the Han as the Southern Shanyu Huhanye had done and migrated westward, taking refuge in the kingdom of Kangju.

From there he reached Sogdiana and built a fortified city in Kangju territory. In 36 BCE he was killed by the Chinese general Chen Tang. This event marks the beginning of the dispersal of fragments of the Western Xiongnu across Eurasia.
