In 91 CE, under successive Han campaigns and pressure from the Southern Xiongnu, the Northern Xiongnu chanyu crossed to the west of the Altai and took refuge on the Kazakh steppe.

The steppe tribes called this mass "Huns" or by other names. The first link in the chain of migration reaching from Central Asia to the Black Sea began here.
