Liu Yuan, khan of the Southern Xiongnu, proclaimed himself the successor of the Han dynasty and founded the kingdom of "Han" (later Zhao).

Seizing on China's civil war, a ruler of Xiongnu origin came to rule northern China. Liu Yuan kept both Xiongnu traditions (the kurultai, the horse sacrifice) and Chinese imperial ritual alive side by side.
