Shi Huang, the first emperor of Qin, drove the Xiongnu out of the Ordos with 300,000 men under the command of General Meng Tian; by joining together the older walls he had the Great Wall built.

It was the first great line of defence, extending from Hejia to Liaodong. Meng Tian remained in the north for 10 years.
