Ibn Majah

Ibn Majah

Ibn Majah, or Ibn Maja al-Qazwini (Arabic: عبد الله محمد بن يزيد بن ماجه الربعي القزويني), was an Iranian hadith scholar and thinker.

Ibn Majah was born in 824 in Qazwin into a Persian family of Arab lineage. His father's name, "Majah" (Maja), means "Moon" in Old Persian (mah in modern Persian), and it is possibly the title of his father, or his mother, or his grandmother.

Biography

It is related that Ibn Majah began to learn hadith in Qazwin at the age of 15–20. At the age of 22, leaving his hometown to travel the Islamic world, he journeyed through Egypt and Khorasan, and through cities such as Basra, Kufa, Damascus, Baghdad, Mecca, Rayy, and Medina. At the end of his journey, Ibn Majah wrote his book titled Sunan Ibn Majah. This book comprises a total of 4,341 accepted hadiths, of which 3,002 were also recorded by others, in five volumes.

According to Ismail Ibn Kathir, he wrote a tafsir and a history book as well, but these have been lost. In the 13th century other writers began to study his five-volume book of accepted hadiths. These studies continued until the 18th century.

Works

Sunan Ibn Majah is one of the six reliable hadith books (Kutub al-Sitta) in the Islamic world.
