Ibn Manzur (full name Muhammad ibn Mukarram ibn Ali, 1233 – 1311/1312) was an Egyptian lexicographer and philologist.
Principal work
He is known for “Lisan al-Arab,” regarded as one of the most comprehensive dictionaries of Classical Arabic. Compiling the major earlier Arabic dictionaries into a single work, it contains roughly eighty thousand entries and has become one of the fundamental reference sources for Arabic-language studies.
Life
He held posts such as secretary and judge at the scholarly centres of his era, and devoted much of his life to compiling classical Arabic texts and to philological work.
