Bülent Ecevit (1925–2006, Ankara) was a poet, journalist-writer, and statesman; he served four times as Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey.
In 1974, while serving as Prime Minister, he headed the government that launched the Cyprus Peace Operation; the operation became a turning point in securing the safety of the Turkish Cypriots on the island, and Ecevit was beloved among the people by the nickname "Karaoğlan."
He is known for his populist stance in favor of labor and production, his simple life, his honesty, and his contributions to literature (his poetry and translations). He is remembered as one of the respected figures of Turkish politics.
