Nursultan Nazarbayev (b. 1940) is the first President of Kazakhstan after independence (1991–2019).
He played an influential role in the institutionalization of Kazakhstan as an independent state, in the transfer of the capital to Astana, and in the formation of Turkic-world cooperation institutions.
