Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (b. 1954, Istanbul) is the President of the Republic of Turkey. He entered politics as Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (1994–1998) and became known for the services he brought to the city. In 2001 he was among the founders of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party).
He served as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2014 and has held the office of President since 2014. His tenure is associated with major transport investments such as divided highways, high-speed rail lines, airports, bridges, and tunnels; city hospitals and advances in healthcare; the drive for domestic production in the defense industry; and the strengthening of Turkey's regional influence.
He has played an active role in developing relations with the Turkic world and in advancing the process of the Organization of Turkic States.
