Abstract In the history of the medieval Iberian kingdoms, the frontier played a primordial role: there were internal political, religious, and cultural frontiers, but there were also important 'external' frontiers, particularly that with Islam. This latter frontier, which was the expression of a constantly changing reality, reflected the history of a country which was in the process of a lengthy transformation. In this sense, it is interesting to note that this frontier ceased to exist at the very moment when the kingdom of Castile reached its maturity of formation after the reconquest of Granada by the Catholic Kings. However, the frontiers of the Christian kingdoms with Islam constituted far more than a political and military boundary, because the frontier was related to a projected ideal which was never abandoned during the Middle Ages: the Reconquest.
