How did the invasion of Britain come about? How did the British tribes react? ‘The Roman Conquest’ looks at the reasons for invasion, the events surrounding invasion, and the initial impact. By ad 47, the Claudian armies occupied Britain as far as the Severn and the Trent. The work of organizing Britain as a regular province was shortly in full swing. Its governorship enjoyed high status. The 50s was a decade of urban development. Archaeologically, we can observe in the late first century and the beginning and middle of the second century the development of the cities and towns of Roman Britain to their full extent. The primary concern of governors in Britain, however, was always defence.
